25 Healthiest Fast Foods

Best of Food
Here are our top picks of go-to goodies for desktop dining, guilt-free snacking, superfast dinners, and more.

We know the score. Saying a food is “good for you” isn’t always a compliment. Lots of things are good for you, but you wouldn’t call them pleasant: booster shots, Brussels sprouts, annual OB-GYN visits. But, luckily, we’ve discovered some fast-and-easy foods that deserve a spot on your grocery list as much for their flavor as for their healthfulness. Our panel of food experts (meet them below) nibbled through 500-plus products to come up with this year’s Best of Food winners: go-to goodies for desktop dining, guilt-free snacking, superfast dinners, and more. You’ll find most of the winners at major stores; we’ve included Web sites for harder-to-find items.

Our Best of Food judges:
Mark Bittman, author of The Best Recipes in the World and the best-selling How to Cook Everything, and host of the PBS show Bittman Takes on America’s Chefs.
Scott Uehlein, executive chef at the acclaimed, Tucson, Arizona–based Canyon Ranch Health Resorts, known for its commitment to naturally healthful gourmet cuisine.
Robin Miller, Health Contributing Editor, cookbook author, and host of the new series Quick Fix Meals With Robin Miller on the Food Network.
Phil Lempert, food-industry expert, author, editor of supermarketguru.com, and food-trends editor and correspondent for NBC’s Today show.
Nancy C. Rodriguez, a master taster, and owner-president of Food Marketing Support Services Inc., a sensory-based, new-product design firm.

Café FriesBest Savory Snack
Snyder’s of Hanover EatSmart Malt Vinegar & Sea Salt Café Fries ($3.49)
The only thing that’s really frylike is the shape, but our judges liked these supercrunchy, tangy snacks made of potato flour all the same. You can munch on a bunch of them—37 to be exact—for just 150 calories, 290 milligrams of sodium, and no trans fat. If malt vinegar isn’t your thing, try the less-intense tomato flavor.

Gourmet TortillasBest Wrap
Tumaro’s Gourmet Tortillas, Multi Grain ($3.64; tumaros.com)
Each of these 100-calorie wraps is loaded with 8 grams of fiber and delivers a pleasantly wheaty flavor. “They’re also a good source of healthy fats thanks to sesame-seed flour, almond meal, and canola oil,” says judge Robin Miller. She suggests baking them for a smarter version of tortilla chips.

Whole Wheat CrackersBest Crackers
South Beach Diet Whole Wheat Crackers ($3.49)
These crispy little crackers have a nutty flavor from whole-grain wheat flour, and are packed in individual bags perfect for stashing in your purse. Each serving has just 100 calories and 3.5 grams of fat (no trans fat), and provides 3 grams of that all-important fiber.
